Not that this is a new year's resolution, but trying some new things this year. One is the Breakout box (breakoutedu.com - think Escape Room) when it gets here (only ordered it back in November!) and the other is a tasting party. Now, the tasting parties have been around for awhile and I've been wanting to try, but haven't quite found the right time or lesson.
Enter January. January is a great time to work with kids - it's cold, the kids need to be more active since sometimes outdoor recess isn't an option, they're coming down from sugar highs they've had since October....
So, I've also been wanting to do more with the awards books earn. I've made a show to all my ages about when a book has a medal on its cover. I do a brief "this is what this award is for" to the students, but that's about all. Since I'm getting ready to start Virginia Readers Choice with K-3, I decided fourth and fifth would learn about Caledecott and Newbery awards! After all, they are getting to that point where they are reading more Newbery and have previously read some of the Caldecott, so I figure it's a good age!
After looking at some ideas from lesson books that the former librarian left me, I thought why not a book tasting? At first, I thought of having students create mock awards for books, based on the criteria. However, I want our first one to be fun and inviting and the kids get excited if we do it again! So, instead, I'm pulling books we have in the library and doing one week Caldecott winners/honor books, the next week Newbery. After experiencing this and other awards, I might then go to the mock awards, but students need some background first on what has already been chosen. It's also a great way for students to experience new books they may not have read or - even better - realize they've read an award winner and get excited and share it with others!
I created menus based off of many many ideas I found on Pinterest and blogs. I wanted the focus to be more on books, but wanted the students to reflect on the books, so I made the questions a yes/no answer, and a rating of 1-5 stars.
So, I'll be doing this the weeks of the 9th and 16th. I'll be sure to post pictures on here on how it goes! If you'd like to see more, I've decided to go ahead and put my menus on TPT and TN since award season will be here soon, and people might want to use them!

An Award and Another Freebie!
Thanks to Bri over at The Price of Teaching for the Liebster Award! Also to Tammy at Dots Of Fun!
Okay, so 11 random things about myself....
*I LOVE the show "The Voice." I really like the "blind audition" idea!
*I have always wanted to be an author.
*I have an unhealthy obsession with containers and baskets. Seriously. If it wasn't for the Dollar Tree, I probably would have been bankrupt by now!
*While I try to be organized at school, it's a mess at home!
*I love meerkats and actually have Meerkat Manor on DVD. :)
*I don't like talking about myself, nor having photos taken of myself (so this list is hard!).
*I test ideas for centers on my 6 year old to see if they're "doable" and on my 11 year old to see if they're "lame."
*I never teach the same unit twice. I often use some of the same ideas, but for some silly reason, I always seem to rewrite them every year!
*I can spend hours on the computer reading different teacher blogs and Pinterest, but alas, our satellite internet does limit our usage!
*My favorite books are by Janet Evanovitch - Stephanie Plum series.
*I actually asked my mom for office supplies (cardstock, page protectors, printer cartridges, etc.) for Christmas! I actually WANT them and not much else. Weird, I know! :)
Okay, so the second part is answering the questions Bri sent, so here goes....
1. If you could chose one famous person to meet, who would it be and why?
Hmm...hard one. I had to think about this one for a bit. Maybe Janet Evanovitch, just to get ideas on how to become a writer (and finding the time to do it in between teaching!). Or, someone more fun would be Adam Levine, because he seems down to earth and fun to talk to on The Voice. That, and I LOVE Maroon 5!
2. What is your favorite smell?
hands down, baking bread. Nothing better in the world :)
3. Other than your computer, what do you hear right now?
Movie on TV that my kids are watching...."How To Train Your Dragon"
4. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy?
Oh my...I would probably pay off all our bills first....then go out and buy something fun! I'm sure my husband would have a few suggestions :)
5. What is the top item on your Christmas list?
sad but true....printer cartridges. Oh, and either an iPod Touch or Kindle or Nook for my use and classroom :)
6. What do you do most when you are bored?
Look at Pinterest or watch TV....I can be a real couch potato!
7. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
author and dog breeder and lawyer (for a short time)
8. Do you have pets?
yes - two dogs, one fish, two cats
9. When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?
when my friend and I were goofing around and trying to "relocate" political signs (shh!). I couldn't do it, but when we got home and confessed what we did, I laughed so hard, I nearly peed my pants! :)
10. What is your favorite children's book?
Bad Kitty books by Nick Bruel and Pigeon books by Mo Willems (tie!)
11. If you could compete in any Olympic sport, what would it be?
I would love to be a runner. I have tried, but can never get my breathing right, then start to hyperventilate...and well, you can guess the rest!

An Award and a 100 Days

Okay, here are my 7:
1. I am a closet cartoon fan. I have the best time watching cartoons with my kids! When Cartoon Network was created, I did a happy dance :) Boomerang sent me over the edge with shows from my childhood (but unfortunately when we downgraded our satellite package, we lost it!). Of course, it helps me to relate to my students when I know just as much about what they're watching as they do! hah hah ;)
2. My grandmother always told me that it makes sense that I ended up teaching in "Louisa County" since my great great grandmother was named Louisa and she was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse!
3. My first date with my husband was at a hockey game.
4. My favorite color is purple.
5. I started out teaching middle school.
6. I love teaching collaborative classes. I mean, who doesn't like to team teach? :) It's great to bounce ideas off of someone, or some days, simply to "tag team" a lesson!
7. I still do a happy dance every time I find I have a new follower or sell a product at the teacher stores!

As for the 100 days...I was looking through the 1001 catalogs that seem to come in the mail this time of year (and no, I'm not complaining....I really do enjoy flipping through them!). I'm sure you're familiar with this scenario....I was looking at some and going "Hmm....I could make that!" and voila! Came across my newest idea: 100 facts for 100 days! In PK-2, and sometimes beyond, we count out the 100 days of school.
For the past couple of years, I've used a magnetic jellybean poster that counts the days off. Cute, but nothing too special. When I was flipping through one of the catalogs, I saw the 100 fact cards, but they were random facts. I thought a theme might be cute! Hence...."100 Fun Facts for 100 Days: Marine Life and Ocean"
I might have bit off more than I could chew! This took me almost a week to gather facts....so I'm hoping I'll do another one, but right now it's not on the top of my list. In the catalog, they charged $11.95 for this....I'm charging $3 as well as including stickers (well, you print them on sticker pages)...10 of each kind, to use to count the days off.

Currently (March), Awards, and An Unexpected Snow Day!
Well, I woke up to a 2 hour delay, then a school closing for something that was forecast to "not be a significant accumulation." In true Virginia fashion, though, it stopped around 12:30 and the temperature is now rising (supposed to be close to 50!).
So, I've been spending my day working on centers and fighting our satellite internet connection. I'm about to upload two rounding centers to my TpT store....very cute (I'll include images below), but first, here is this month's Currently from Farley over at Oh' Boy 4th Grade!
By the way...a disclaimer...how hard is it to find adjectives that begin with "Y"???? I had to look them up because I was thinking yucky, yummy, and young didn't exactly describe me! Oh, here's the disclaimer: "Yeasty: full of restless energy or creativity" NOT what you might be thinking! :)
Okay, on to my "it's s'now school!" work! Hee hee
We are focusing on rounding this week and after pulling out my old centers (which the kids love by the way, but they're getting worn out!) I decided to make two new ones to post on TpT as well as use in my room!
I think they turned out really cute! Last (but definitely not least!), I wanted to pass on the "Lovely Blog Award" Thanks again to Emily at Second Grade Silliness for awarding me this! The rules are as follows: pass on to five more bloggers who you feel deserve the award! :)
So, here are my five.........
